Mass transit for Indiana?

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Laura Colar
Recently, we've seen many stories, headlines and even heard Mayor Greg Ballard address the potential of bringing a better mass transit program to Indianapolis and possibly even high speed rail. A recent headline from Fox 59 reads:

"Indianapolis is the nation's 14th largest city, but is 100 on the list when it comes to public transportation. Local leaders are trying to change that with a new multi-billion dollar plan to make it happen."

I, for one, would be elated if the city is able to take steps to make public transit and an actual reality. Let's face facts that they systems currently in place including IndyGo buses don't come close to providing people with reliable transportation options on a daily basis, as well as options to get to the outskirts of Indy that offer character including Broad Ripple, Carmel, Fishers, etc.

As someone still riding around in a '99 Ford Taurus, I consistently wake up in a cold sweat after dreaming the old girl conked out on me on my way to an important meeting. I would sleep much better knowing, should she leave me for an automotive heaven (where she would most certainly go after what we've been through together), I have other options.

The plan calls for expanded bus lines and more options when it comes to railways. Being a native of Chicago, I would love to see something similar to their Metra station put into place.

Mass transit will cost the city money to produce but it will also create jobs, after time, it would also begin to generate new revenue and what's most important, attract the people and businesses the city needs to grow. Growth for the city of Indianapolis will benefit all those who live either in or around it. You could even go so far as to say the entire state of Indiana.

What are your thoughts on expanding our city's mass transit options? What do you think it's going to take in terms of resources and to you, is it worth it? We'd love to hear from you.
